Driver dies after crashing head-on with SUV while trying to pass another vehicle, police say

Police said a 38-year-old woman and three young children were in the SUV. All were transported to the hospital with injuries.

BRIGHTON, Colo. — A driver died in a crash Sunday night after colliding head-on with an SUV while driving at excessive speeds and crossing the double yellow line in an attempt to pass another vehicle, the Brighton Police Department said Monday afternoon.

The crash happened just after 11 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of South 27th Avenue and Kestrel Street in Brighton, according to a news release. A 38-year-old woman and three young children were in the other vehicle and were taken to a hospital.

The initial investigation revealed that a 29-year-old man driving a Dodge sedan was traveling north on 27th near Kestrel at excessive speeds when he crossed the double yellow line in an attempt to pass another vehicle. Police said the driver crashed head-on with a GM midsize SUV traveling south, police said.

When officers arrived, they determined that the at-fault driver was deceased. The passenger, another 29-year-old man, was severely injured, police said.

In the victim's vehicle, the woman was trapped inside. Air medical transport was requested but couldn't respond due to weather. She was taken by ambulance to an area hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The three children were also taken to an area hospital, two with minor injuries and one severely injured. The woman and two of the children remained in the hospital as of Monday, police said. It wasn't clear whether the woman is the mother of the children.

Evidence suggests that speed, drugs and/or alcohol contributed to the crash, police said.

South 27th Avenue was shut down in both directions for several hours while the crash was investigated.

This investigation remains ongoing and is still in the very early stages. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has further information and has not spoken with officers is asked to call the Brighton Police Tip Line at 303-655-8740.

The identity of the deceased will be released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office.
