DENVER — This week's unusually mild weather might mean you're dreaming of hosting your Thanksgiving meal outdoors next week. But don't be fooled: Much cooler and potentially snowy weather looks increasingly likely for next week, starting as soon as Sunday.
A shift in the weather pattern will likely usher in much cooler weather across most of the state for Sunday and Monday. While specifics are lacking this far out, temperatures 20 or even 30 degrees colder than this week's look like a safe bet for early next week across virtually the entire state, with mountain snow also in the offing as soon as this weekend.
Snow and colder temperatures will likely spill into the mountains starting on Sunday as a weaker area of low pressure moves in from the west. That'll likely lead to some snow in the mountains on Sunday and into Monday.
Plan on some snow and wind if you're traveling through the high terrain on Sunday, with some bouts of heavier snow likely on Sunday night and into Monday morning. A widespread three-inch-plus snow event looks likely for most of the high country on Sunday night into Monday morning, with the potential for a significant snowfall (six inches or more) for the central and northern mountains.
As far as impacts to the Front Range and lower elevations like Denver, it doesn't look overly impressive. At this point, a bit of rain could mix with some snow on Sunday night into Monday morning. Accumulations look insignificant, but they could coincide with the Monday morning commute.
As always, we'll fine tune details as it gets closer. But at this point, it doesn't look like much for the urban corridor.
That colder weather in Denver probably starts in earnest on Sunday, and it could have some impacts on the Broncos' home game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday at 6:20 p.m. (You can watch that game on 9NEWS.) While a major snowstorm doesn't look likely, some rain or perhaps snow, and much colder weather, looks likely for the game itself. Again, stay tuned for more specifics as the game gets closer.
That colder weather will likely stick around into next week as an upper-level trough, or an elongated area of low pressure, settles in over the western and central U.S. While temperatures should bounce back into the 50s or perhaps even the low 60s for Tuesday and Wednesday, another storm system looks likely to move in sometime late next week.
That system could bring cooler and perhaps even snowy weather around or just after Thanksgiving, but with more than a week until turkey day, there are still lots of timing questions that'll have big impacts on our Thanksgiving Day weather.
While specifics are, again, admittedly lacking, it's a fairly safe bet that next week won't be nearly as warm as this one. So if you're a fan of the warmer and drier weather, soak it in while you can - because weather that's a bit more typical of mid-to-late November returns next week and in time for Thanksgiving.
